Value found in old-growth forests

September 4, 2008 at 1:51 PM EDTVANCOUVER — Leaving British Columbia's old-growth forests standing may make more economic sense than cutting them down for timber, especially as the province looks to strategies to cut global warming, a new B.C. study suggests. The report from Simon Fraser University challenges the status quo and uses Ministry of Forest data to show that conservation wins out over logging when forests are valued for their role in capturing carbon from the atmosphere, protecting endangered species and providing opportunities for recreation. The study backed by three environmental groups – Wilderness Committee, David Suzuki Foundation, and Ecojustice – used computer modelling to look at a variety of conservation and logging scenarios in a large tract of forest near Vancouver. In almost every scenario, the researchers said, they found that the value of the carbon captured and stored by the trees far outweighed the value of the lumber harvested from the logs.Internet LinksB.C. forest information map Faisal Moola, science director for the David Suzuki Foundation, called the results a clear indicator that B.C. should be protecting its old-growth forest as it works with other western provinces to reduce global warming.“The old-growth forests that we have are not only going to be a benefit in the fight against climate change, but there's also a significant economic windfall that could be celebrated by British Columbians,” he said.

i think that they should not cut down the trees just for timber since the trees protect the endangered species in a way

that makes sence the old-growth forest should stay and not be chopped down. If anything they should get lumber from other forests but, thats only if they need it.

I think that they shouden't cut down all the trees because you would kill alot of habitates and animals.however if they absoulutly need trees they should only chop down a quarter of the forest.

I do not like that people are cutting down trees that are housing and protecting inocent animals.

i srongly belive that they should let the forest grow and let the trees live like us

they should let the forest grow and should not cut it down because theres lots of animals that live there. If they cut it down the animals wont have homes

I think that that is unfair because the animals that have bean living there their whole lives are now sofring becaus the people need timder

i think they shouldn't cut down trees because they destroyed the enviroment and if we don't have enough trees oxegen would not be made so don't cut down trees for timber

I agree with the text because if we keep consuming the trees this may cause climate changes and global warming. From now on Old Grouth Forests shoud remain standing.

I think they should leave the trees alone becaus eit would be good for the environment and it woul save homes for little animals like bunnys and chipmunks

I think that they shouldn't cut dowm the trees because of enivironment and we will never going to see cute animals. So I don't agree with cutting down the trees for timber.
